My Top 10 Favorite Pokémon

My Top 10 Favorite Pokémon

How’s it going? I'm back with another Pokémon Style Blog, And this time I want to talk about some of my favorite Pokémon. In this list, I will explain how I found the Pokémon, the design, and playability. It was not easy to come up with 10 of my favorite Pokémon; I had to really think hard on this one. And I will note, before I start this list I never played the main series Pokémon games, but I have played a lot of fan games like Roblox Brick Bronze that simulate the 3ds games really well. While the only authentic Pokémon game that I have played is Pokémon Unite, I still enjoy playing the fan games since they are a large contributor to my Pokémon journey. So without further ado, here are my top 10 favorite Pokémon.

10. Baxcalibur

Baxcalibur, was the first ever Pseudo legendary that I came to like. And, no, Baxcalibur is not a legendary Pokémon, a Pseudo legendary was the term that Pokémon fans came up with, because all Pseudo legendary have 600 base stats. I'm very picky when it comes to dragon types, especially Pseudo legendary. When I saw Baxcalibur, I thought this Pokémon would be interesting, not just for the fact that it looks likes Godzilla or anything. But I have to say, Baxcalibur is a great Pokémon to battle with, and its Dragon/Ice type is rare because the only other Pokémon with this type combo is the legendary Pokémon, Kyurem. Baxcalibur is also one the Pseudo legendary to get its own signature ability called “Thermal Exchange” where if a fire type move were to hit it, the attack stat will get a boost. Actually this Pokémon can even threaten certain legendary Pokémon, especially dragon type legendries like Rayquaza. I have to say it has a cool design, awesome move pool, and it's great for competitive play.

9. Sylveon

Mentally, I went back and forth with this Pokémon. Sylveon is part of the Eeveelution family which houses eight different types including Sylveon. When you can catch an Eevee, you can decide on which of those eight types you can evolve it into. And this was what I was bouncing back and forth with, because I don’t think there is a bad Eeveelution. Vaporeon and Sylveon are almost a tie, in my opinion. However, I went with Sylveon because I think it can do better in battle and its design is great for a Fairy type. Sylveon performs well in battles because it has a high Special Defense and nice Special Attack. Also, if you use the move “Calm mind" to raise your Special Attack and Special Defense, you would absolutely wall any opposing Special Attacker. What also makes this move great for Sylveon is that it has a Fairy type move called “Draining Kiss” that deals damage and recovers Hp. And again, the only reason why I chose Sylveon over Vaporeon, is because I find the design of Sylveon more unique and there are not a lot of fairy type Pokémon I use.

8.Primarina

Primarina, is one of my favorite water starters. Well, I mean, it is on this list so I guess that is obvious. But I do have great history with this Pokémon, Popplio, which is what Primarina was before it evolved. It was the second starter that I chose for my journeys. When Primarina was released in the Sun and Moon games, I feel like most people slept on this one. Everyone would choose Rowlet, as it was the most popular to choose. However, my style is to not follow the crowd and wanted to give the other starters a shot. And sure, Popplio was not the first Alola starter I chose, but I still enjoyed using it in battles. Primarina has great typing with it having the Water/Fairy type, it is actually one of the best water starter Pokémon to use in competition. I will note that the only weird thing about this Pokémon, is it’s 87% male when its design looks more female which has a 12% of encountering. That's like my only reason why it's eight on my list, but overall, it still is a great starter.

7. Venusaur

Venusaur, is one of the classic starters that started the whole Pokémon franchise. Venusaur has to be my favorite grass type Pokémon. I first started using Venusaur in Pokémon Unite, he was one of my mains. And if you're wondering what Pokémon Unite is, Pokémon Unite, is an online pvp arena game that allows mobile and the Nintendo switch devices to cross play. Going back to Venusaur, the reason why I chose this Pokémon is because I wanted to use a classic starter. My cousin had already chosen Blastoise, which left me with Charizard or Venusaur. Since Charizard is overrated anyway, I went with Venusaur and I'm glad I did. Here’s the thing, people would assume that Venusaur would be the weakest out of the Kanto starters, but that's not the case. In fact, I think Vensaur might be the strongest out of the two. Ok, I know what you're thinking, “How? Charizard is a Fire/Flying type, it would destroy that thing with ease.” Sure, and with Charizard having mega evolution, how could Venusaur stand a chance? Well, Venusaur has two abilities that can put Charizard in the corner. Venusaur has a hidden ability called “Chlorophyll” which allows Venusaur to gain double speed in sunlight. The other ability is when Venusaur mega evolves called “Thick Fat” which would make it resistant to Fire and Ice type moves. But since Venusaur is a grass type, it only makes the moves neutral. These two abilities really make Venusaur scary in competition. This starter is also my only hope, against Primal Groudon. So if you think your fire type Pokémon can put Venusaur in the corner, I would think twice because Venusaur is no joke.

6. Sirfetch'd

Ok Sirfetch’d is just an awesome fighting type. It’s underrated - for reasons I do not know why. I mean, seeing this Pokémon in the anime, on Ash's team was just a treat to see. Ash did not have a lot of Galar Pokémon on his team, but I'm glad he had Sirfetch’d. But it was not just the anime that had to convince me of this Pokémon, it was also the games too. When Nintendo announced that they were going to make a Galarian Farfetch'd, that was going to be fighting type, I was like, “eh -  really? How are they going to do that?”. But when they announced that Galarian Farfetch'd was able to evolve into Sirfetch’d, I was hyped. This duck had a sword and shield, which was fitting, because the game was called Pokémon Sword and Shield. Sirfetch’d is a decent Pokémon in competition as it is more of a revenge hitter. Sirfetch’d has a priority move called “First Impression" which is a bug type move that always strikes first. “First Impression" is a great move to counter Psychic type Pokémon, the only downfall to this move is that it can only be used on the first turn . What also makes this Pokémon fun to use, is its hidden ability “Scrappy” which allows it to hit ghost type Pokémon where they would be immune to fighting or normal type moves. The only thing that makes this Pokémon difficult to get is you need to land three critical hits in one battle for it to evolve. Which is not that hard if your Farfetch'd is holding its signature item “Leek” which can increase its critical-hit ratio by two stages. Despite that, I would still have this Pokémon by my side.

5. Incineroar

Incineroar, my all time favorite starter Pokémon. This was the first Pokémon that I chose for my journey. When I first started playing Pokémon Brick Bronze, I had the choice to choose a starter Pokémon from Kanto through Alola. I did not know all the starter Pokémon back then; I chose this flaming cat Pokémon named Litten, which is Incineroar’s first stage. As I went along my journey, my Litten finally evolved into a Torracat and then Incineroar. It was not just that game that made love that Pokémon, it was also Super Smash Bros and Pokémon Sun and Moon anime. Now I do not own a Nintendo switch, but my cousin did and he had Super Smash Bros. And with Incineroar being in the game, it did not take long to figure out who I was going to play as. Good times, my cousin would win and then I would almost win. In the Pokémon anime, I always love how Ash’s Torracat wanted to be as strong as the Mask Royal Incineroar. Seeing it evolve into Incineroar, and then to finally beat the other Incineroar was awesome. Incineroar is great for competition, like Primarina, it’s actually one of the best fire starter Pokémon. Alola really knows how to make good starters. There are a lot more things I could talk about with Incineroar, but we have more Pokémon on this list to cover.

4. Espathra

Ok, there is a reason why this Pokémon earned its spot as number four, and let me explain why. When Scarlet and Violet was released, I remember going to the Pokémon page and just browsing through all the new Pokémon, trying to see what I would like. And let me tell you, most of the new Paldea dex, in design, were kind of meh. But when I saw this Pokémon, I knew I had to train it. I'm so glad I did, Espathra might be one of the most threatening Pokémon on my team. Espathra has two abilities, one being its signature ability “Opportunist” where it copies stat boost by the opponent, the other being “Speed boost” where it gains speed at the end of each turn. Espathra also has its signature move called “Lumina Crash” where it harshly lowers the Special defense to its opponent. This Pokémon also has a really elegant design, like sometimes they make psychic types look kind of ugly. This Pokémon is also my best psychic type and I wish it would get more recognition; even though it is pretty - it is actually very deadly in battle. I also wish that this Pokémon would appear more in the anime. It was in an episode, but Espathra was not the main focus. In the end, I just found this Pokémon really cool.

3. Slowbro/Galarian Form

We finally have made it to my top three Pokémon. Let me tell you, coming up with the top three, was actually the easy part. I'm a big fan of regional variants, and Galarian Slowbro has to be one of my favorites out of the Galar region. I mean, look at it, dude’s got a shell arm cannon, like seriously-that's cool. Slowbro's original form was cool, but this form is flat out awesome. Galarian Slowbro has Poison/Psychic typing as for the Kanto Slowbro would have Water/Psychic. I also like the cool design on the Galar one, with it having purple details. This Pokémon only appeared in like two episodes in the anime, but it was still exciting to see it on the screen. Now I know I said Espathra was my best Psychic Pokémon, and I'm not wrong, Slowbro does get Poison/Psychic typing, which gives it a wide variety of moves to use. But this Pokémon has the chance to be even faster than Espathra, even if it gets the speed boost. I know what you are thinking “Huh? How can something that's called slow be faster?” I will explain. Not only did they make this Pokémon with an awesome type and design, but they gave it an cool ability called “Quick Draw” which will allow Slowbro to have a 30% chance to attack first like a priority move. And if you pair this up with the item “Quick Claw” that gives the user a 20% chance to attack first. So basically, you are having 50% chance to attack first even against faster Pokémon. I don't know why I do not see people use this Pokémon, it's super cool and fun to use. Well, maybe people are just boring. But still -  this Pokémon has no doubt earned its right to be in my number three spot.

2. Persian/ Alolan Form

Out of any of the regional variants, Alolan Persian always tops the cake. How I came to like this Pokemon, is I knew someone that liked Meowth the Kanto version, and I liked Meowth as well. But wanting to be different from everyone else, I went with Alolan Meowth. I have to say I chose right, this Pokemon was awesome. Seeing both Meowth and Persian in the Sun and Moon anime was absolute fun to see. I like how, in that one episode where Alolan Meowth tried to kill the team rocket Meowth by using Mimikyu curse, where if you see it’s true form you will die. And  that was a kid’s show, so of course Meowth did not die, but Alolan Meowth's intentions were still there. In the series, Persian would be featured in some episodes and there would be this particular Persian that would be a jerk for no reason. I understand that Persian and Meowth’s characteristics are just meant to be jerks with class, but Meowth was at least a funny jerk. I still have a great time using this Pokemon in battles. Persian may not have the best stats, but don't let that fool you because I have swept teams with this Pokemon, and I can explain how I did it. The Alolan Persian gets a new type being dark and a new ability “Fur Coat” which reduces the damage from physical attack by 50%. Persian was perfect for battles, I could send this Pokemon out first, as long as there were no Fairy types. I will have to say, Persian’s speed stat was pretty good, as it could out-speed some strong Pokémon. Even if Persian could not sweep a whole team, it still made it where the next Pokémon had an easier time picking up where Persian left off. Now a lot of people have their opinions about Persian design but I love it, and I don't care if it's considered one of the ugliest dark types. Plus there are some legendaries that are not pleasant to look at, and yes, I'm looking at the Enamorus Users. I have a really great history with this Pokémon and I'm glad it’s on my team.

1. Mimikyu

Mimikyu, this Pokémon changed my life, Mimikyu is what started my awesome obsession with the Pokémon franchise. Just note, this is going to be a little longer to read - because when I say I love this little Dude, I mean, I LOVE this little Dude. It all started when I used to work at a cafe my family owned. It was one of our slow days and we had a regular customer who came in with his three kids. They had an encyclopedia Pokémon book filled with every Pokémon from Kanto to Alola. They started to show me and I had some basic knowledge of Pokémon; when I say basic, I could name like six Pokémon at that time. They were even so generous as to let me see the book. I was just fascinated with every Pokémon in that book and just kept flipping through the pages. As I keep flipping through pages I stumbled on a Pokémon called Mimikyu. At first, I asked them why this Pokémon looks like a Pikachu but creepier. They explained that Mimikyu was a Pokémon trying to look like Pikachu to help it gain more friends. I went home after work and just started researching all this Pokémon stuff including Mimikyu. Mimikyu is a Ghost/Fairy type and it was one of its kind until Flutter Mane came in and took its type. I even started watching the Sun and Moon anime, I even remember buying my own encyclopedia Pokémon book so I can learn more. Mimikyu was awesome in the anime, there was a reason for it. When Team Rocket finds Mimikyu and decides to catch it, the only reason why Mimikyu joins Team Rocket is because Mimikyu hates Pikachu. Like this guy resented Pikachu, any time Team Rocket would face Ash, Mimikyu would be the first one to attack his Pikachu. Mimikyu only wanted to fight Ash’s Pikachu and nothing else, and that's what I loved about this Pokémon. Mimikyu’s rivalry against Pikachu was like the best thing. Normally Team Rocket Pokémon are not able to match Pikachu strength, But Mimikyu was able to. Now that I think about it, Mimikyu was the only reason Team Rocket was able to win a battle against Ash after 20 years of losing. I love this Pokemon so much, I was even hyped to see Team Rocket and I was always rooting for them and not Ash. This Pokemon is in all of my teams; no matter what game I'm playing, Mimikyu is going to be in everytime. This Pokemon is great for competition as Mimikyu has a great move pool and its signature ability called “Disguise” where Mimikyu can not take any damage on the first hit. This Pokemon even got 3rd place for Pokemon of the year in 2020. I wish it could be 1st but that's just my opinion. In the end, Mimikyu is not just my favorite Pokemon, but it's my favorite character of all time.
